Hey Rebels, Learning is my favorite (picture Elf 'smiling is my favorite' vibes). Mostly because I know when I learn more I can become more to make my life more. Life is all executed from my brain, and the better my brain is, the better my life is - IMO. Thats why I LOVE making life an entire science experiment of testing and trying things how to see how they fit, learning new things and making them ours. And even though I LOVE doing this - I don't always excel at it. It can be hard to see something and not think - well thats exactly how it is supposed to be, vs, how about I see how that is supposed to be FOR ME. I have gone back and forth with proficiency and applying things to be for me (aka breaking the rules of how it 'should' go) in so many different areas - but most recently it has been my personal style (pulling myself out of that for the last year hahah and trying to re-figure it out and I feel like I'm there) and my business. There are so many 🚩SHOULDS🚩 and they are hiding everywhere! From fashion trends to business blueprints. This week your reminder is to stop, and just for one moment, be a critical consumer and ask, do I truly like this? What else do I need to know about this to decide? And let's get after it! Today In the Rebellion
I recently announced that I am closing down the coaching program, WholeYOUniversity, that I have been running for 5 years! It’s a program I’ve loved, one that has gotten 100s of women (and some men) massive life long results, and also supported the life that I wanted to live. And I want to share with you the 10 things that I have learned in opening, running and closing that coaching program! This is lesson #4: ‘Practice Makes Informed & Awesome’ Or ‘Paid Internships are Awesome’ Aka breaking the rule of how to build your offer suite To describe to you what I learned from my experience in coaching and what you can take away from it, I need to first share the evolution of my offer suite and coaching biz! When I first started coaching - I didn’t have any idea what an offer suite was, how to build one or what to do to create a “scalable business.” What I did know was the scientific process of doing an experiment, collecting data, and making an informed decision on how to edit and enhance the next trial. 👩🏻🔬 I’ve always considered myself a scientist of sorts - I think we all are scientists if we are critical consumers of the world. I work to observe and learn from everything. My business was no different. Before I started WholeYOU I had been taking people who had approached me for advice just one on one - they saw the result I was getting - knew I was a teacher - so they knew I could help them out. SO I did. I made workout plans, nutrition plans and all sorts of things to help people out. But once I had the idea to make it more than just a favor I did to people, I had all sorts of ideas on what to do and how to do it. My business partner (yes, it wasn’t just me at the start!) was a yoga instructor and because we both naturally did so much in person stuff already - we immediately started hosting workshops, movement and nutrition classes, meal prep workshops and such - it was so much fun. I was serving probably 1-3, 1:1 clients at the time. The year we started Whole Human was also the year that I decided to step away from teaching - it’s when I decided - welp, this business is it then! Then the pandemic hit - so there was no more in person events and workshops etc everything went online. I immediately felt isolated like everyone else. And as a self proclaimed ‘in person person,’ I decided to build a group membership. I wanted to create something just like what I would do in a classroom and have a place where people could learn together. Homeroom, my educational course, was born! I built Homeroom on the knowledge that I had learned over time in my own experience with health and fitness with all of the studying that I had learned and factual knowledge in my certifications. Homeroom was a great membership, but it didn’t take off like I had planned and thought and after that I went back to expanding my 1:1 coaching. Then I experimented with different styles of my 1:1 coaching, just virtual check ins, live calls, group calls in addition to one on one calls etc. I experimented with 2 calls a month, 4 calls a month, 3 calls a month, 0 calls a month. ALL OF THE THINGS. THEN I took my knowledge from all of my 1:1 coaching and trying out homeroom and worked on trying group programs. Ultimately WholeYOU morphed into a combination of the best of ALL the worlds! It was really powerful for me to experiment in all of the ways - to try all of the different 1:1 styles and different group styles. It helped me figure out what works best for ME and what works best for my clients. And while I think that MOST of the learnings are specific to what you will work best for you too (remember we are writing our own rules and you get to write your own business rules too) I do think that this piece of advice is universal. 1:1 coaching is vital in helping you figure out HOW YOU GET A CLIENT A TRANSFORMATION. When I started homeroom - I didn’t have a ton of data on HOW I got clients results. I just had the science of what stuff did in your body. BUT the science is NOT the thing that gets our clients results - (did you listen to my last episode?) I had people buy into that program, love it, but not get results. And that is how I learned that in order for a program to be successful in needed a couple of different things: 🏗 Supports and structures for how to get my clients to show up and take actions 📍 A clear path to follow so they knew where they were going. 🤝 A coach to help them decipher and decide what was for them. These were all things that I figured out by working 1:1 with people. And here is how. I would take notes with all of my different 1:1 clients and I would start to look at things like 💭 What is it that is making (insert goal) hard for them? 💭 What is is that is making (insert goal) easy for them? 💭 What am I saying in return that doesn’t make it easier for them? 💭 What am I saying in return that IS making it easier for them? Then I would look across all of my different clients and see the patterns. This showed me: 1️⃣ The language that I need to use. I had found time and time that worked was an autonomy based approach, so this became the core to how I approached my clients (and still do regardless of content). 2️⃣ The focus areas of the science that most people needed - so that became part of my framework and approach. 3️⃣ How often my clients needed touch points, what needed to be face to face and what could be text response, and informed how I built out my offers. 4️⃣ What kept my clients most consistent and motivated so that they would reach their transformation - and that became a keep component to my approach. For me, I do I think this goes for all service providers - working 1:1 with clients is the best way to gather data on what it is that fits you AND what will also get your clients the best and fastest transformation. Notes & Quotes To Noodle On 🧠A book that I thought was pretty stellar was the book The Mountain is You, by Brianna West. It's all about self sabotage and how you can break through it. Here are some of my favorite notes and quotes from the book! 🤯 We have resistance to ANY unknown, even if it is good for us, because it is a loss of control and that feels uncomfortable. 🤯 What you believe about life is what you make true about it. 🤯 Problems aren't problems. They are symptoms of you sabotaging yourself. 🤯 If you are repeating a behavior, there has to be a reason you are keeping it in your life. Your job is to find out why. 🤯 We accomplish great things when we simply show up and allow ourselves to create something meaningful and important to us. 🤯 It's had to be the person you want to be in an environment thats like the person you aren't. 🤯 There's a difference between failing because its new and failing because you didn't show up. 🤯 Feelings are not always an accurate reflection of reality, but they are an accurate reflection of your thoughts. Whether or not you are a coach or a service provider - I think this learning goes a long way. This same vision of experimenting with how we work and approach our coworkers best, the team that you lead, and even your partner is so beneficial. You can start to see patterns in what you say, how you support and the intentions that you set and what they do for both you and the other party (whoever they are!) Life is meant to be an experiment - and when you are treating it as a paid internship that you get to LEARN from, vs have everything already known and set in stone, it's my opinion that you stay more optimistic, motivated and life continues to get and feel better! Until Next Week, Later Alligator, Kayla p.s. there are TWO ways to work with me. 1: Coaches College is my signature coaching skills program where I teach coaches autonomy based coaching strategies that will get their clients better and faster results and get the coach more money while doing it. I don't know that I have had anything saved, shared, and asked for as much as Jon and I's couples goal setting process has been recently. So today 🪄 your wish is my command! Instead of a regular newsletter describing our process, I've made you a downloadable worksheet so that you can go through it with your partner. (I thought about making it printable with lines - but in reality, do people print things anymore? You can use it with paper/journal/google doc - however your brain likes to do...
Hey Reader, This morning at run club I was telling a lovely person I just met about how Jon quit his job, and we moved to NYC (because everywhere we go people ask why we moved here, and we always just say 'for LIFE!') and she was very moved with an 'I wish that I could do that!' And the truth is, we ALL can do it. The golden handcuffs are just another one of society's rules - a rule about your corporate job being the thing that is keeping you safe. But, my thought is that - that is ONE way to...
